In response to the 9th international conference in support of Syria, Razan Rashidi, Executive Director of The Syria Campaign said:

“It’s good to see the EU pledging its support for the Syrian people. However, the commitment does not meet the magnitude of what’s needed at this crucial historic moment, especially following the suspension of US aid.

“The money pledged today will go some way towards filling the gap but people are struggling for survival across Syria, many still in camps unable to return to destroyed homes. The rebuilding that is required across the country is immense and with an economy in crisis, greater support is desperately needed.

“Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries and across the world cannot automatically return home following the fall of the Assad regime. There are so many hurdles they must face before they are able to freely choose to go home. In the meantime, they must be supported in their host communities and their rights upheld.

“Syria’s civil society must lead the peaceful transition of power and independent routes to justice and accountability. Syrian groups have a vital role to play in combating disinformation, documenting war crimes and monitor human rights abuses and this all needs the support of the international community.”
